General Information

1. VISA

Portuguese citizens travelling on a Portuguese passport, do not require to hold a visa when travelling to South Africa for a intended stay of 90 days or less, or, when in transit. If the intended stay will exceed  90 days, then a valid visa is required.

2. PASSPORTS

Maxi(64 pages) and tourist passport(32 pages)

Temporary passport

Issued to:
South African citizens who must travel urgently for a valid reason and cannot wait for their proper passports to be issued. Please note that not all countries accept a temporary South African passport and it is advisable to check with the Embassy of the destination country whether a temporary South African passport is allowed.




Child passport

Issued to:
Children under the age of 16 years.




Emergency travel certificate

1 week

Valid for:
1 month and only for a single journey back to South Africa

 

Issued to:
South African citizens in distress, where circumstances necessitate urgent travel and there is not enough time to wait for a proper passport or travel document to be issued.
Please note that an emergency passport is valid for one month only and allow for one way travel, normally back to South Africa.






Replacement of lost/stolen South African passport

For the replacement of lost/stolen South African passport the tariff is double the current tariff. Provided that where the document had been stolen/lost/damaged through no negligence on the part of the holder, only the normal fee applicable will be payable.

Application for Travel Documents

All applications must be on a duly completed
BI-73 application form and must be lodged personally at a Home Affairs domestic office or a South African Embassy or Mission, if abroad. The applicant must satisfy the passport officer of his or her identity, his or her photographs will be checked to ensure that they are a true image of the applicant, and his or her fingerprints (applicants 16 years or older) will be taken for checking against the Population Register.
