2014

On 13 May 2014, the South African Embassy commemorated South Africa’s 20 Years of Freedom and Democracy with a wreath-laying ceremony at the windrose located in front of the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) where tribute was paid to those who sacrificed their lives so that South Africa could be freed from apartheid and thrive as a democracy.  The event was followed by a formal lunch at the Marriott Hotel where more than 200 guests were treated to real South African cuisine, ranging from Cape fish soup, bobotie and yellow rice and malva pudding.  The guests were also able to view a small exhibition recalling South Africa’s successful transition from the dark days of apartheid to the brighter days of post-1994 progress and events.  We wish to thank all those who celebrated this important milestone in South Africa’s history with us.
