Ambassador Keitumetse Matthews addresses conference at the Portuguese Olympic Committee Headquarters

At the invitation of Mr José Manuel Constantino, Chair of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (POC), Ambassador Keitumetse Matthews was the keynote speaker at the conference on The Role of Sports in the Promotion of Peace and the Fight against Ethnic Discrimination, held on 6 April 2015 to coincide with the United Nations’ International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

The conference was preceded by the unveiling ceremony of a plaque in honour of the late President Nelson Mandela at the POC headquarters.  The plaque sports the following Nelson Mandela quote in the Portuguese language: 

“Sport has the power to change the world – it has the power to inspire - it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.”

The theme of the keynote address was “Sport as a tool for reconciliation and nation building” using the mega sports events in South Africa, starting with the 1995 Rugby World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations, the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and the Blue Bulls’ in Soweto, as examples of the implementation of the South African government’s sport policy and how it was embraced by the people of South Africa. The role played by the late President Nelson Mandela was the core of the presentation.

 

The Embassy wishes to thank the Portuguese Olympic Committee for the special place of honour it has granted Nelson Mandela and his inspirational words at the POC Headquarters!

 

    

Mission represents SA at Seixal Intercultural Fair

On 6 February 2015, the Mission participated for the first time in the Intercultural Fair held yearly (this was the 8th edition) in Seixal, known as Encontro Intercultural Saberes e Sabores. The Fair brought together representatives of local associations and foreign communities residing in the municipality. We thank the City Council for inviting the Mission to represent South Africa and hope to be back again next year!

Mission pays tribute to Anti-Apartheid Activists across the Commonwealth

On 29 January 2015, the Mission closed its 20 Years of Democracy celebrations with a seminar paying tribute to the anti-apartheid activists and movements across the Commonwealth and their important contribution to bringing about democratic change in South Africa.  Representatives of the Embassies o India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Canada, Mozambique, Nigeria and Australia spoke about how their countries were involved in placing public and political pressure on South Africa to move towards democracy following centuries of racial discrimination.  The leader of Portugal’s Communist Party, Jerónimo de Sousa, was also present to give an account of his party’s involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle, as well as that of other democrats in Portugal.  Journalist António Mateus provided a moving account of his years in Mozambique as a young correspondent, where he witnessed an attempt by the apartheid regime to eliminate anti-apartheid activist, Albie Sachs.  The seminar was followed by a cocktail where participants and members of the public had the opportunity to exchange views.

Trade & Investment seminar: "South Africa – Open for Business "

On 26 February 2015, the South African Embassy in Portugal co-hosted a successful Trade & Investment seminar: South Africa – Open for Business at the headquarters of AEP, the Portuguese Business Association in Leça da Palmeira, Porto,

Mr. Rui Fragoso, Senior Manager: Investment Development at GGDA-Gauteng Economic and Development Agencywas the keynote speaker at the event that was moderated by Mr. Américo Ferreira, the President of the Luso-South African Chamber of Commerce.

The seminar was chaired by Ambassador KST Matthews, the President of the Business Association (AEP), Mr Paulo Nunes de Almeida, and Mr. Pedro Ortigão Correia, Board Member the Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP). Three Portuguese companies, investors in South Africa, shared with the audience their experience in the South African market. The Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP) also addressed the audience.

The seminar which was attended by more than 70 people (businessmen, consultants and academics) was also a platform to launch the upcoming trade delegation to South Africa in April 2015, organized by AEP.

The South African Embassy participated once again in "Os Especialistas" tourism road show

The Tourism Road Show group Os Especialistas (The Specialists) was back on the road in March 2015. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, The Specialists travelled to 10 cities in Portugal to meet with local travel agents in organized workshops at selected venues. The Tourism Section of the South African Embassy in Lisbon participated once again on the tourism road show to promote South Africa as a holiday destination of choice to the Portuguese travel agents. For the 2015 edition, the Tourism Section focussed on the safari experience, Cape Town and the Portuguese landmarks in the Western Cape such as the Cape of Good Hope, MosselBay, Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas. The new SA Tourism maps in Portuguese and the new promotional CD’s were also distributed to all travel agents.

Nation Focus Day at Riverside International Church

 

This event was hosted in collaboration with the Riverside International Church in Cascais on Sunday, 18 January 2015. The main objective of the event was to promote goodwill amongst the Luso-South Africans in Portugal and also to expose South Africa to nationals from other countries. Nation Focus Days were introduced in Riverside International Church in 2002. This was the 3rd time that the focus was on South Africa. Guests were also treated to pap and boerewors and chakalaka and South African wines.
