VOTER REGISTRATION INFORMATION - 2024 GENERAL ELECTIONS
Dear South Africans
Kindly see below, information regarding registration to vote abroad in the 2024 Elections, for your attention.
All South African Citizens who wish to vote in the upcoming General Elections are requested to read the information below carefully, to ensure that they will be able to vote on the day of the elections. The following information was received from the Independent Election Committee (IEC), in South Africa.
Only South African citizens who are not on the voters’ roll are required to register.
NB. If a South African citizen is already registered to vote inside South Africa:
- You need not reregister to vote outside of the country.
- However, you will be required to complete an online “NOTIFICATION AND APPLICATION TO CEO FOR SPECIAL VOTES ABROAD” FORM application to indicate that you will be voting outside of the country.
- The online “NOTIFICATION AND APPLICATION TO CEO FOR SPECIAL VOTE ABROAD” FORM application will only be available on the IEC website on the date of proclamation for a period of 15 days thereafter.
- Citizens can also check to confirm if they are registered on the IEC website at www.elections.org.za
Therefore, if you are a South African residing in Portugal and you are registered on the voters roll as per the IEC, you will need to wait until the date of the Elections is announced. You will then have to complete the “NOTIFICATION AND APPLICATION TO CEO FOR SPECIAL VOTES ABROAD” FORM, which will only be online after the proclamation date. Do not expect to find the form before the date of the General Election is proclaimed, as it will not be available.
If you are not registered as a voter on the IEC voters roll, you may register online or apply physically at the Embassy on 27 or 28 January 2024. Should you be unable to apply during this period, the Embassy will be able to assist you on Monday to Friday, and during public hours (08:30 to 12:30) until the proclamation date, at which time the voter’s role closes.
