The Mission participated in Portugal Exportador 2017 and organised a Trade & Investment Seminar “Business News on South Africa”

Mr Jacob Moatshe, Minister Counsellor (Economic) at the South African Embassy in Berlin was the Keynote Speaker and the Counsellor  Mr Hugo Lambrechts was responsible for the Opening Remarks. The successful and well-attended workshop was moderated by Ms Mónica Silvares, senior economic journalist, and had also the participation of Mr Sérgio Espadas, AICEP’s Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency Representative in South Africa via Skype from Johannesburg. Mr Ricardo Malheiro CEO Operating Unit Africa at ThyssenKrupp presented a case study.

Ambassador MJ Gaoretelelwe hosted the Sporting CP Soccer Academies-South Africa

Ambassador MJ Gaoretelelwe hosted the Sporting CP Soccer Academies-South Africa at the Embassy. The athletes, coaches and parents paid a courtesy call to the SA Embassy in Lisbon. The SA team is in Portugal to attend the world football tournament, IBER CUP (4-9 July in Estoril).

National Day 2017

The South African Mission in Lisbon celebrated South Africa's 23 Years of Freedom with a lively and well attended reception on 27 April 2017. Singer and entertainer Luis Sequeira paid tribute to South African music and set the mood for a very enjoyable and festive occasion. Thank you to all the South African friends and guests who came to celebrate with us!

Another sucessfull participation in Mundo Abreu 2017

The Mission participated in the 15th edition of MUNDO ABREU Travel and Tourism fair in partnership with Mundial Travel, a South African-based Portuguese-owned travel agency that represents Abreu in South Africa.

The promise of “discounts of up to 60%” was once again the main reason for the public to visit the fair with more than 120 000 people visiting the 10 000 m2 of the fair which hosted about 200 domestic and foreign exhibitors in Lisbon in April (8&9).

The South African stand was decorated with SA Tourism roll ups, featuring culture and wild animals, as well as SA arts and crafts (Ndebele dolls and beaded crafts). Tourism brochures, maps and small give aways  were distributed to the public during the two days of the event.  The fair was an excellent opportunity for the Embassy to market and promote South Africa as a major travel destination and create a bigger awareness of the country’s tourism offer to the general public in Portugal.

Mundo Abreu (www.mundoabreu.pt) event is organized by Abreu, the biggest Portuguese tour operator and owner of the largest network of travel agencies in the country.

SA stand at Lisbon Travel Market - BTL 2017

It was a pleasure for the Embassy to participate in the 2017 edition of the Lisbon Travel Market (Bolsa de Turismo de Lisboa) which took place in Lisbon from 15 to 19 March. The successful SA stand was used as a privileged platform for the promotion of South Africa as a long haul destination of choice in Portugal. At the same time is assisted the strategy to create a bigger awareness in Portugal of the South African market potential as a stable and sophisticated tourism long haul destination.

In the evening of the second day, Ambassador Gaoretelelwe hosted a promotional event at the stand. The well-attended cocktail was another opportunity to further brand South Africa, by serving and showcasing SA products to selected guests and media: biltong, SA wines, Ceres juices, and Amarula liquor.

Sthembile Khumalo, a beader from Africa Smiles was at the stand showcasing her Zulu beadwork and the crafts of her community in Durban, while interacting with the stand visitors.

The leading tour operators selling South Africa in Portugal -Across Tour Operator, NovoTours and Image Tours - as well as the South African Airways representative were also present at the stand in a perfect combination of synergies.

We're sure the 2018 edition will be equally or even more successful!

The South African Embassy was back on the Tourism Road Show "Os Especialistas" for the 2017 edition

The Tourism Road Show group "Os Especialistas" (The Specialists) was back on the road, from 22 February to 5 March 2017.  The Specialists travelled to 8 cities in Portugal to meet with local travel agents in organized tourism workshops at selected venues: Porto, Braga, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Algarve, Setúbal and Lisbon.

At the events, the Tourism Section of the Embassy engaged with the invited local travel agents and used the opportunity to promote South Africa as a holiday destination of choice to the Portuguese travel agents. At the end of the workshops, the travel agents had the chance to win prizes offered by the 14 tourism players. In this regard, the SA Embassy in Lisbon further used the opportunity to brand South Africa and offered bottles of Amarula and  SA wines. This year and in close partnership with TAAG Angolan Airlines and Sabi Sabi Resort, the Embassy also awarded 8 flight tickets to South Africa (Johannesburg or Cape Town) and safari experience (accommodation included) at Kruger Park.

Ambassador MJ Gaoretelelwe honoroured the event by attending the successful workshop in Lisbon and handed the prize to the lucky winner of TAAG and Sabi Sabi resort prize.

 

Trade & Investment Seminar “South Africa: Business Opportunities in the Automotive sector”

The Embassy in Portugal organised a Trade & Investment Seminar “South Africa: Business Opportunities in the Automotive sector” in close cooperation with Cefamol, the Portuguese Moulds & Tooling Association. The event took place in Marinha Grande (north of Lisbon) on 1 February 2017.

The seminar was jointly hosted by Ambassador MJ Gaoretelelwe and Mr J Faustino, the President of CEFAMOL, and aimed at creating a bigger awareness of the South African market potential as a stable and sophisticated trade & investment destination specifically in the automotive sector.

Mr Jorge Maia, Head of Research: Economic Studies at the IDC was the invited keynote Speaker. The programme further included AICEP, the Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency, and a case-study of a Portuguese company (CR Moulds) which has invested in the automotive sector in South Africa. The Closing Remarks were be made by Mr Manuel Oliveira, Secretary General at CEFAMOL, who used the opportunity to announce a EU funded trade mission to South Africa in April 2017 which includes a visit to the NAACAM Show in Durban.
