1. TRAVELLING TO SOUTH AFRICA

Portuguese citizens (who are not dual citizens, i.e. who are not both South African and Portuguese citizens) travelling on Portuguese passports do not require a visa up to 90 days if the intended visit to South Africa is for tourism purposes, business meetings, international trade fairs or conferences, or when in transit through South Africa to other countries.

A visitor's visa not exceeding a period of ninety (90) days may therefore be issued to a Portuguese citizen holding a portuguese passport at a South African port of entry e.g. international airport, provided that he or she is able to submit the following documentation to the immigration officer:

1. A machine readable passport valid for no less than thirty (30) days after the visitor's intended departure from the Republic of South Africa, and having at least two (2) blank pages for endorsements;

2. A valid return air flight ticket or proof of reservation thereof;

3. A yellow fever vaccination certificate if the visitor travelled or intends to travel from or transit through a yellow fever endemic area before entering the Republic of South Africa.

Any queries relating to visas are handled by the Consular Section at the South African Embassy in Lisbon.

Kindly note that only Portuguese citizens, Permanent Residents in Portugal or Temporary Residents (min. 6 months) are eligible to apply for a Visa at the SA Embassy in Lisbon.

If you are not included in one of these categories, please be informed that you will have to apply at the South African Embassy in your country of origin / nationality or in the country of your permanent residence.

Visas are considered by the South African missions abroad and must be affixed in the applicants' passports before departing to the RSA. Visas are not issued on arrival at South African ports of entry. Applicants arriving without visas will be refused entry into the RSA and deported to their country of origin.

To find out if you require a visa and/or pay South African visa tariffs, please see the list of countries exempt from visa control.
