To find out if you require a tourist visa, please click here to confirm LIST OF NATIONALITIES EXEMPT FROM VISA CONTROL

Portuguese citizens travelling on Portuguese passports do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 for tourism purposes, business meetings, international trade fairs, or conferences, or when in transit through South Africa to other countries.

The following documentation should be submitted at the port of entry in South Africa:

1. Passport valid for no less than thirty (30) days after the visitor's intended departure from the Republic of South Africa and having at least two (2) blank pages for endorsements.

2. A valid return air flight ticket or proof of reservation thereof.

3. A yellow fever vaccination certificate - only required if the visitor has travelled or intends to travel from or transit through a yellow fever endemic area before entering the Republic of South Africa.

If you are not exempted from visa, i.e., if  you need a visa to South Africa, or if you are exempted for tourism but you are planning to stay in the country for more than 90 days or for any other purpose than tourism, kindly note that only Portuguese citizens, Permanent Residents in Portugal or Temporary Residents in Portugal (minimum 6 months) are eligible to apply for a Visa at the SA Embassy in Lisbon.

If you are not included in one of these categories, please be informed that you will have to apply at the South African Embassy in your country of origin / nationality or in the country of your permanent residence.

Visas are assessed by the South African missions abroad and must be affixed to the applicants' passports before departing to the RSA.

Visas are not issued on arrival at South African ports of entry.

Applicants (who are not exempted from visas) arriving without visas will be refused entry into the RSA and deported to their country of origin.

N.B: Dual citizens, who are both South African and Portuguese citizens, must use their SA Passports to enter, stay and depart from the Republic of South Africa.

Any queries relating to visas are handled by the Consular Section at the South African Embassy in Lisbon.
